Have you visited Arugam Bay before?

Remember the small guesthouse where you stayed? The small restaurant where you ate? It is now either severely damaged or completely destroyed, and your host has lost, at best, their livelihood, but often much more. If you`re trying to contact someone in Arugam Bay, we have the contact numbers for the local people below. If you`d like to help them financially, we have their direct bank account details. CLICK ON THE PERSON BELOW, SEND US AN EMAIL FROM THEIR PAGE BY CLICKING "request relevant bank details", we will pass on the necessary information, SEND YOUR DONATION DIRECTLY TO THEM.

Never visited the Bay?

Despite $billions being donated worldwide, the goverment '200 metre rule' has meant people in the Bay have received little assistance in recovery, and many have not been able to even clear rubble from their property one year on. The Tsunami Hotel, for example, recieved a total of $140 in relief. We hope there are people reading this who believe random acts of kindness to strangers are good for everyone involved. Just choose to sponsor one on the people below.

A typical story for a person in Arugam Bay will go something like this…

  • They may, or may not, have survived the tsunami.
  • 0-10 of their family members are dead.
  • Many of their rooms are destroyed.
  • Guest rooms, homes, restaurants and kitchens that are still standing have lost their contents and fittings.
  • They may now be living in a tent, camp or temporary shelter
  • They have dragged their business up from poverty, with hard work and struggle over many years.
  • All their savings were invested in their business
  • They were not insured (only one establishment in Arugam Bay was)
  • They were directly supporting a large family and 3-20 employees (hence indirectly, the employee`s families). Numerous small local businesses also on their hotels also.
  • Their means of earning a livelihood is in ruins, and have received a tiny amount of financial aid to begin again.
  • They can still put a smile on their face, are ready to work, and can do incredible things with a little money. They just need the kickstart...
