The Tsunami Hotel is located in the centre of Arugam Bay on the East coast of Sri Lanka - one of the most beautiful beaches on the Island. Arugam Bay is rightly famous for its surfing, but you don’t need to be a surfer to enjoy your time here…

It’s hard to say what makes Arugam Bay so special - the stunning natural beauty, the character of the local people, the surf, the fresh exotic seafood, the uniquely relaxed atmosphere of the place. It’s a combination of all these things, and something more you need to experience for yourselves.

We’re just to the North of Yala National Park, and because of the island’s past troubles this area remains unspoilt by the over-development found on the West coast. It’s a wildlife reserve in its own right. You can regularly see herds of wild elephants, eagles, peacocks, monkeys, water buffalo, all manner of exotic wildlife, and rare birds in the local bird sanctuary – not to mention the sea life. Arugam Bay is a fishing village, and the daily catch includes barracuda, tuna, shark, huge tiger prawns, and lobster (naturally, all are available in our restaurant). There are dolphins, and even turtles that have been known to lay eggs 50 yards from our Hotel.

June 2004 saw Arugam Bay host the inaugural ‘Champion of Champions’ British Professional Surf Association tour competition; Says BPSA president David Reed, “the contest exceeded all expectations and it finished off with one of the best finals we’ve ever seen. We have secured funding for the contest for the next 5 years. Our aim is to make it bigger and better next year”.

‘The Point’ in Arugam Bay (5-10 minutes walk and visible from our hotel) is regarded as a top world surf destination. It is a well lined up right hand point break, generating a clean peeling glassy wave that is rideable up to 400 yards. Additionally there are four or five quality breaks within a 30 minute radius. The surfing season runs April to October, thereafter the action switches to the West Coast.

The Bay is beautiful year round, and many of our guests are not surfers, preferring to relax and take it easy. You can spot the Tsunami from anywhere in the Bay, it’s the only place with 50ft high Redwood trees, providing cool shade for guests to while away the hours.

We have 12 rooms and spacious grounds for you to relax in. There is safe swimming directly in front, and we have panoramic views of Arugam Bay. But we don’t see the need to do a hard sell - we feel our guests say it better than we ever could, and our guestbook speaks volumes.
